What Natural Skincare Means to Me: A Herbalist's Perspective in Ireland
Share
The term natural skincare is everywhere, especially here in Ireland, where more and more people are looking for simple, sustainable ways to care for their skin.
But what does natural skincare actually mean?
It's a phrase that sounds reassuring and straightforward, yet when you look a little closer, it's not always as clear as we might think. The truth is a little more nuanced and that's not a bad thing.
Is natural skincare really 100% natural?
This is where things can get confusing.
Many skincare products, even those described as natural go through processes to make them safe, stable and effective. For example, products that contain water need preservation to keep them safe over time. Ingredients are often refined, filtered or processed before they ever make it into a jar or bottle.
Even certifications that focus on organic or natural standards allow for a small amount of processing, simply because in some cases there isn't a practical alternative.
So while the idea of "100% natural skincare" is appealing, the reality is often more complex.
Natural vs chemical; what does it really mean?
We often hear skincare described as "natural" or "chemical", as if they are opposites. But in reality, everything from plant oils to water is made up of chemical compounds.
Even something as simple as water or air is, technically, a chemical.
The difference isn't whether something is a chemical, but how it is sourced, how it is processed, and how it is used.
What natural skincare means to me as a herbalist
As a community herbalist, my understanding of natural skincare is a little different.
For me, it's not about perfection or absolute claims.
It's about working as closely with nature as possible.
That means choosing high-quality oils and butters, infusing them slowly with whole plants, and creating simple formulations that feel gentle and supportive.
I don't think of skincare in terms of correcting or changing the skin.
I think of it as supporting it.
A gentler, simpler approach
The products I create are designed to be gentle and simple.
They are not about "anti-ageing" or trying to push the skin in a certain direction. Instead, they are about nourishment, balance, and giving the skin what it needs to function well.
Sometimes skin doesn't need more.
It just needs consistency, care, and kindness.
Natural skincare in Ireland
In Ireland, there has been a real shift towards supporting small-batch makers and locally produced skincare. People are increasingly looking for natural skincare in Ireland that reflects sustainability, transparency, and a connection to place.
For many, that means choosing natural skincare products in Ireland that are handcrafted, thoughtfully sourced, and rooted in traditional plant knowledge.
This is something I feel deeply connected to, working with native Irish herbs and creating products that reflect both the landscape and the seasons.
What matters more than the word "natural"
When we move beyond the label, a few things become much more important:
🌿 Ingredient quality
Where ingredients come from, and how ethically they are grown and handled.
🌿 How ingredients are prepared
Keeping processing as minimal and gentle as possible.
🌿 Simplicity
Formulations that are clear, purposeful, and not overly complicated.
🌿 Sustainability
Choosing materials and methods that respect both people and the environment.
Small batch, seasonal and rooted in place
One of my main goals with Natures Alchemy is to stay connected to where the products begin.
Many of the herbs I use are grown or gathered locally, in a way that is sustainable and respectful of the land. That connection is something I want to protect as the business grows.
Because of that, Natures Alchemy will always be a small-batch brand.
There may be times when products are out of stock and that's okay. It reflects the reality of working with nature, seasons, and what is available at any given time.
For me, growth isn't about scale or global reach.
It's about staying true to the process, the plants, and the people using the products.
A different way of thinking about skincare
Natural skincare isn't about chasing an ideal or ticking a box.
It's about connection to the plants, to the seasons, and to the small, everyday rituals that support us.
When we shift our focus in that way, skincare becomes something more than a routine. It becomes part of how we care for ourselves, in a way that feels simple, sustainable and real.
