The Truth About Reef-Friendly Sun Cream: What Every Traveller Should Know

If you walk into a resort gift shop or local pharmacy on holiday, you'll probably see shelves lined with sun cream. Many bottles proudly display phrases such as "Reef Friendly," "Ocean Safe" or "Coral Respect."

Naturally, you assume you're making the right choice. You part with your hard-earned holiday money, head to the beach and feel reassured that you're helping to protect the beautiful marine life you're about to swim alongside.

Unfortunately, it isn't always that simple.

Recently, while on holiday in Egypt, our family ran out of the mineral sun cream we'd carefully researched before travelling. We were staying at Sunrise Diamond Beach Resort beside one of the most spectacular coral reefs I have ever seen. Every morning we could snorkel straight from the beach into an underwater world filled with colourful fish and delicate coral formations that have taken centuries to grow.

Standing in the resort giftshop, I spent almost an hour turning bottle after bottle over, reading every ingredient list I could find. The more I read, the more frustrated I became. Many of the products proudly labelled as "reef friendly" still contained ingredients that scientists have raised concerns about because of their potential impact on marine ecosystems.

That afternoon inspired this blog.


Why coral reefs matter

Before we talk about sun cream, it's worth understanding what's at stake.

Although coral reefs cover less than one per cent of the ocean floor, they support an estimated 25 per cent of all marine species at some stage of their lives.

They protect coastlines from storms, provide food and livelihoods for millions of people and generate billions of pounds through tourism every year.

Yet around the world, coral reefs are under pressure from rising sea temperatures, pollution, overfishing and coastal development.

Every positive choice we make helps reduce one small part of that pressure.


What does "reef friendly" actually mean?

The surprising answer is not very much.

Unlike terms such as "organic", there is currently no internationally recognised legal definition of "reef friendly" or "reef safe."

That means companies can use these phrases without meeting one universal standard.

Many brands simply removed two UV filters, oxybenzone and octinoxate, after they became the focus of scientific research and were restricted in places including Hawaii and Palau.

However, many products replaced them with other chemical UV filters such as octocrylene, homosalate, octisalate and avobenzone.

These ingredients are excellent at protecting our skin from UV damage, but research into their environmental impact is still evolving. Several studies have suggested that some chemical UV filters may contribute to coral stress and affect marine ecosystems under certain conditions.

The important point is this:

A "reef friendly" label does not necessarily tell you what ingredients are inside the bottle.


Chemical or mineral? What's the difference?

There are two main types of sun cream.

Chemical sun creams

Chemical sun creams absorb UV radiation before it damages the skin.

Common UV filters include:

  • Oxybenzone
  • Octinoxate
  • Octocrylene
  • Avobenzone
  • Homosalate
  • Octisalate

They are popular because they feel light on the skin and leave little or no white residue.

Mineral sun creams

Mineral sun creams work differently.

They create a protective barrier on the skin using naturally occurring minerals such as:

  • Zinc oxide
  • Titanium dioxide

If you're trying to make a more environmentally conscious choice, many marine conservation organisations recommend choosing non-nano zinc oxide or non-nano titanium dioxide wherever possible.


Why does "non-nano" matter?

This is one of the most confusing parts of buying a mineral sun cream.

Nano minerals have been processed into extremely tiny particles that spread more easily across the skin and reduce the white appearance traditionally associated with mineral sun creams.

Non-nano minerals have larger particle sizes and remain on the skin's surface.

If you're choosing a mineral sun cream specifically because of environmental concerns, look for products that clearly state non-nano on the packaging.


The Red Sea is one of the world's most precious coral ecosystems

Before visiting Egypt, I knew the Red Sea was famous for snorkelling.

What I didn't fully appreciate was just how important it is scientifically.

The northern Red Sea is home to some of the world's most resilient coral reefs. Scientists believe many of these reefs have an unusually high tolerance to rising sea temperatures, making them incredibly important for the future of coral conservation.

Protecting them has become a national priority.

During our stay, I discovered that the Sunrise Group, which owns Sunrise Diamond Beach Resort, had recently met with Egypt's Minister for the Environment to review environmental investment projects supporting sustainable tourism, biodiversity and nature conservation in Sharm El Sheikh.

Seeing that level of commitment made me stop and think.

If governments, conservation organisations and tourism businesses are investing so much in protecting these remarkable reefs, shouldn't choosing an environmentally responsible sun cream be part of that conversation too?

Protecting the Red Sea isn't just the responsibility of governments or hotels.

It also depends on the everyday choices made by millions of visitors.


It doesn't stop at the beach

Many people assume this only matters if you're swimming directly over coral reefs.

The reality is much broader.

Whether you're swimming in the sea, relaxing in the hotel pool or washing your sun cream off in the shower at the end of the day, those ingredients eventually enter the wider water system.

Modern wastewater treatment removes many contaminants, but some ingredients can persist in the environment.

The same principle applies at home.

The shampoo we rinse away.

The cleaning products we pour down the sink.

The laundry detergents we use every week.

Everything eventually becomes part of a much larger water cycle.

Our rivers flow into our seas.

Our choices travel much further than we often realise.


How to choose a more reef-conscious sun cream

You don't need to become an expert in cosmetic chemistry.

A few simple habits can make a real difference.

✔ Read the ingredient list rather than relying on marketing claims.

✔ Choose non-nano mineral sun creams where possible.

✔ Pack your sun cream before you travel rather than relying on resort shops.

✔ Wear protective clothing, hats and seek shade during the hottest part of the day to reduce the amount of sun cream you need.

✔ Support brands that are transparent about both their ingredients and their environmental commitments. My favourites are Odyskin and Sun-tribe and I discovered Rays and Rocks an Egyptian brand. 

Why this matters to me

As someone who formulates skincare, this experience reinforced something I've believed for a long time.

Sustainability isn't just about recyclable packaging.

It begins much earlier.

It begins with asking questions.

Where does this ingredient come from?

What happens after it's washed away?

Could there be a better alternative?

No product is completely impact free.

But every decision we make as formulators and consumers has consequences.


Every drop ends up somewhere

One thing this holiday reminded me is that the water disappearing down our drains doesn't disappear at all.

Whether it's sun cream washed off after a swim, shampoo rinsed away in the shower or the cleaning products we use every day at home, everything eventually becomes part of a much bigger water system.

The choices we make don't end in the bathroom.

They travel through rivers, lakes and oceans before coming back to us again.

Perhaps protecting our environment doesn't always begin with grand gestures.

Sometimes it starts simply by turning the bottle over and reading the ingredients.
