Camino Packing List: Essential Natural Skincare for Pilgrims

In May 2024, I walked part of the Camino de Santiago with my mother-in-law and a couple of other family members to celebrate her 70th birthday. We also raised money for Heal Gaza along the way. We planned 70 kilometres over 4 days but ended up walking 75km. When you're carrying everything on your back, every gram counts. Here's what I learned about packing skincare for walking the Camino.

The Camino Philosophy: Less is More

Walking the Camino teaches you quickly that you don't need half of what you think you do. By day three, most pilgrims are posting boxes home filled with essentials that turned out to be anything but.

The same applies to skincare. You don't need a 10 step routine when you're walking through Spanish villages. You need products that work hard, pack light, and do multiple jobs.

What Your Skin Actually Needs on El Camino

Long days of walking, sun exposure, wind, varying climates, and sometimes questionable water quality mean your skin needs:

  • Protection from the elements
  • Deep nourishment and repair
  • Multi purpose products that save space and weight
  • Natural ingredients that won't irritate sun exposed or wind chapped skin
  • Sustainable packaging (because the Camino teaches you to tread lightly)

My Essential Camino Skincare

1. Heel and Feet Balm

Your feet are doing all the work on el Camino. A dedicated Heel and Feet Balm is essential for preventing blisters, soothing tired feet at the end of long days, and keeping skin supple.

Apply it every night in the albergue. Your feet will thank you.

2. One for All Balm (20ml Travel Size)

This is your multi tasker. The One for All Balm in 20ml handles everything from chapped lips to dry hands, windburned cheeks to minor scrapes.

Lightweight, leak proof, and endlessly useful. One tin, countless uses.

3. Natural Lip Balm

Sun, wind, and hours of walking mean your lips take a beating. A good Natural Lip Balm is non negotiable.

Keep it in your pocket for easy access throughout the day.

4. Discovery Box for Everything Else

For deodorant, cleanser, and other essentials, our Discovery Box gives you travel size versions of everything you need without the bulk.

Natural deodorant for shared albergue spaces, gentle cleansers for end of day refresh, and sustainable options that won't add to waste along the Way.

5. Sun Protection

This isn't optional. The Spanish sun is relentless, especially across the Meseta. Pack a mineral sunscreen and reapply religiously.

What I Didn't Pack (And Didn't Miss)

  • Toners, serums, or anything with more than three ingredients
  • Makeup (you won't care, trust me)
  • Heavy moisturisers (the balms do the job)
  • Anything in glass or bulky packaging

Lessons from Walking the Camino

El Camino strips away everything unnecessary. It teaches you that you don't need much to feel good, to care for yourself, or to move through the world.

And that lesson stays with you long after you've walked the final steps into Santiago.

Pack light. Walk far. Carry only what serves you.

Buen Camino.
